The Floating Bubble City of Singapore

The Ecotopia 2121 Project details the futures of 100 cities across the globe as though they've somehow overcome all environmental challenges and become super-ecofriendly. This month, we visualize the future of Singapore in the year 2121 AD.

The Lion City was born to trade and the little problem of planetary-wide sea-level rise shall not stop this. In 2121, Singapore city floats above the eroded Singapore Island on a disc-shaped ‘space station’ type platform.

The hydrogen in the huge bubble-balloons is produced by solar-powered electrolysis of sea spray; a process occurring within the surface membranes of the balloons. (So, as sea-spray is whipped into the air, the balloon's skin captures it and splits the water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen using solar cells also embedded in the skin of the balloon.)
